Urologists are surgeons who also practice medicine in the office setting. Urologists typically spend roughly equal time in office, hospital and operating room. They perform minor surgeries in the office such as cystoscopy and vasectomy.
Urologists commonly perform procedures in the operating room, such as ureteroscopic kidney stone procedures, lithotripsy (for kidney stones) and TURP prostate surgery. Some procedures are performed using laser, microwave, radio-wave, ultrasonic, electrohydrolic, laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques.
