The best care

Urologists are surgeons who also practice medicine in the office setting.  Urologists typically spend roughly equal time in office, hospital and operating room.  They perform minor surgeries in the office such as cystoscopy and vasectomy.

Urologists commonly perform procedures in the operating room, such as ureteroscopic kidney stone procedures, lithotripsy (for kidney stones) and TURP prostate surgery.  Some procedures are performed using laser, microwave, radio-wave, ultrasonic, electrohydrolic, laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques. The choice of which technology is used depends on a combination of clinical indications and patient preference, of course.

Urologists also perform major surgery including radical prostatectomy (for prostate cancer), radical cystectomy with urinary diversion (for bladder cancer) and radical or partial nephrectomy (for kidney/renal) cancer).

Urologists also spend many hours per week working in the office setting seeing regular patients.  Our work involves physical examinations, reading radiology scans and x-rays, clinically interpreting lab tests, microbiology reports, pathology reports and genomic tests and counseling patients patients relative to interpretation the all such findings.  Sometimes patients need just a little reassurance.  At other times they may need much more.

Most patients do not require any form of surgery!  Fortunately, most urology conditions can be effectively treated with medication, hormone treatments, herbal preparations and even life-style changes.

The field of urology continues to grow with advances in screening, prevention and treatment for a wide range of urology conditions including urinary tract infections (UTI), prostatitis, prostate enlargement, cancer, PSA testing, hormonal medicine, sexual medicine, infertility, urinary incontinence, kidney stone disease and many others.  Urologists commonly chose to sub-specialize in one or more areas of this large combination medical-surgical specialty.  Our practice involves behavioral therapies, herbal medicine, hormone therapy, standard medical treatments, minimally invasive office-based surgical procedures, urodynamics, laparoscopic surgery, laser surgery, lithotripsy and other standard surgical treatments.
